SUMMARY:The Art of Wine with Women In Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Raise a glass to creativity and connection in this one-of-a-kind event where the art of winemaking meets the strategy of design. The Art of Wine at Garagiste Wine Bar is an interactive tasting experience curated specifically for our AIA Las Vegas community\, including AIA\, Assoc. AIA\, and Allied members. This event explores the analytical and creative intersection of sensory storytelling and spatial design\, empowering members to elevate their practice and add deeper value to their projects. \nGuests will be treated to three full glasses of distinctive wines + charcuterie. As you taste each one\, we will uncover how terroir\, fermentation\, and barrel aging influence a wine’s aroma\, color\, and mouthfeel. We will analyze how these nuanced\, foundational processes mirror the strategic decisions made in material selection\, lighting\, and narrative design. This live\, introductory course is designed to inspire new ways to engage clients\, enrich hospitality environments\, and transform the built environment through intentional spatial storytelling. \nLearning Highlights: \n\nUnderstand the key stages of winemaking and analyze their specific sensory outcomes.\nExplore how environmental factors (terroir) and aging techniques directly impact flavor profiles and the end-user experience.\nDraw strategic\, creative parallels between the art of winemaking and architectural design disciplines.\nLearn to craft compelling\, story-driven presentations that provide measurable value and connect deeply with clients.\n\nWhether you are a wine enthusiast or a professional looking to expand your strategic toolkit\, this experience—presented by the AIA Las Vegas Women in Architecture Committee—offers a fresh\, visionary perspective on design through the art of wine. Don’t miss this unforgettable blend of education\, design\, and inspiration aimed at elevating our local design community. \nThank you to Ally Sponsor Goodhead Consulting Engineers\, LLC

SUMMARY:Placemaking Summit 2026
DESCRIPTION:Historic preservation and architecture are deeply intertwined\, they’re essentially two sides of the same coin\, shaping how we interpret\, and protect the built environment over time. As cities evolve under pressure\, we are increasingly asked to navigate the tension between preserving the past and building for the future. This summit convenes architects\, planners\, developers and cultural leaders to discuss the evolving relationship between preservation and redevelopment in Southern Nevada. Drawing from local perspectives\, including insights shaped by institutions like The Neon Museum\, the conversation will examine how design decisions are made in a unique landscape such as Las Vegas\, where cultural memory\, economic pressure\, and identity are constantly in flux. \nCredits: 3 LU | HSW \nSession highlights include: \nAdaptive Reuse as SustainabilityExploring how existing structures are reimagined for new use\, from warehouses to lofts and galleries. Topics include material reuse\, reduced demolition waste\, and creative design within existing constraints\, with examples of adaptive reuse across the city. \nUrban Redevelopment & RevitalizationA look at how preservation can serve as an anchor for urban renewal\, and the role cultural institutions play in maintaining living history amid ongoing city-wide transformation. \nCultural Storytelling Through DesignHow preserved architecture reflects and communicates the stories of communities\, craftsmanship\, and social and economic history—preserving identity through the built environment. \nEvent Agenda\n1:00 – 1:30 PM – Check-In & Lunch\nWelcome reception · Networking \n1:30 PM – Welcome from AIA Leadership\nOpening remarks \n1:35 PM – Brett Robillard\, AIA\nGensler: Historic Commercial Center Vision Plan \n2:35 PM – Break \n2:45 PM – A Conversation about The Historic Westside\nConversation featuring Dedra Edmond-Drew and Melvin Green\, AIA \n3:45 PM – Robert Finnegan\, PE\nEngineering Las Vegas: A Brief History in Time \n4:45 PM – Closing Discussion\nLed by Erik Swendseid\,AIA \n5:00 PM – Event Ends \nThank you to Advocate Sponsor\nWalter P Moore \nThank you to Ally Sponsor\nGensler

SUMMARY:Designing for the Mojave Desert: A Conversation on Native Landscaping Policy\, Practice\, and Performance
DESCRIPTION:Las Vegas is at an inflection point. As water scarcity intensifies and landscape standards evolve\, the case for native and regionally adaptive planting has never been stronger — yet barriers in procurement\, policy\, availability\, and perception continue to slow adoption. \nJoin the AIA Las Vegas Placemaking Committee on April 30 for a dynamic moderated panel exploring how landscape decisions are made in Southern Nevada\, from concept through installation and long-term maintenance. This discussion will bring together leading voices across design\, horticulture\, policy\, and practice to share real-world experience on cost\, procurement\, risk\, and performance when working with native and regionally adaptive plant material. \nThe panel will focus on what works\, what does not\, and how project teams are adapting their approach to create more durable\, climate-appropriate landscapes without sacrificing project goals. Attendees will gain insight into the biggest challenges in incorporating native plant material\, the limitations surrounding plant availability and procurement\, the importance of collaboration across teams\, and the long-term maintenance considerations that impact project success. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn what part of the project lifecycle presents the biggest challenges in incorporating native and regionally adaptive plant material.\nLearn the challenges that exist in scaling native and regional plant availability compared to traditional landscape palettes.\nAssess how collaboration impacts the feasibility and execution of native landscaping strategies.\nAssess how native and regionally adaptive landscapes perform over time\, including maintenance requirements\, common failure points\, and strategies for long-term success.\n\nModerated by:\nJazmine Harris — Placemaking Committee Chair\, AIA Las Vegas \nPanelists: \n\nNorm Schilling\nMelissa Gonzalez\nKym Martin\n\nEvent Details:\nDate: April 30\nLocation: UNR Cooperative Extension\, 8050 Paradise Rd #100\, Las Vegas\, NV 89123 — Classrooms B&C \nCredits: 1.5 LU|HSW \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a tour of the new native garden\, seed greenhouse\, harvesting area\, or seed library after the panel discussion by Lauren McGue. \nThis event is presented by the AIA Las Vegas Placemaking Committee as part of its ongoing commitment to design excellence\, sustainability\, and the transformation of the built environment in Southern Nevada. \nNote: Classroom assignment is subject to change. Updates will be communicated prior to the event.
