Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) in 7 Climate Zones:  An Analysis of How to Design NZEB’s in Varied Climates

Presented by John Andary Bioclimatic Design Leader at Integral Group, David Kaneda, PE., Eur Ing, FAIA, LEED Fellow, Managing Principal at Integral Group and  John Weale, an Engineer Fellow and Associate Principal at Integral Group

Case studies of Net Zero Energy buildings in 7 distinctly different climates compare techniques to effectively drive

energy use down to reach net-zero energy.

In 2011,  John Andary joined Integral Group as Principal and Bioclimatic Design Leader.  Prior to joining Integral Group, he managed similar offices for Keen Engineering and Stantec. He has been Principal-In-Charge on numerous AIA COTE Top Ten, LEED Platinum Certified and Net Zero Energy facilities, notably the Research Support Facility at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). At 370,000 square feet, it is considered to be the largest measured and verified Zero Net Energy / LEED Platinum building in the world.

David Kaneda, PE, Eur Ing, FAIA, LEED Fellow, is a leading innovator in Integral Group's electrical team, as well as serving as the Managing Principal the San Jose office, which is the first "Z squared" (net zero energy consumption, zero carbon emission) commercial building in the U.S. His responsibilities include: developing sustainable electrical, lighting, daylighting and renewable energy design concepts, office management, and business development. His current focus includes topics such as system integration, dashboards, feedback loops, renewable energy, ecodistricts, microgrids, DC distribution, circadian cycles, EV charging, smart buildings, energy efficiency, thermal comfort and cost effectiveness.

John Weale has been involved as a lead designer or key technical adviser on Integral Group's highly sustainable projects.  In the green building sector, John specializes in cost effective mechanical systems that provide the efficiency needed to earn most, if not all, of the LEED Energy Efficiency points (EAc1).  In the high technology sector, John has designed many high-efficiency systems for technology companies, laboratory buildings, museums and manufacturing buildings with specialized cooling, ventilation, exhaust and pressurization control requirements.
