In 1971 the AIA Las Vegas Chapter began working with the Southern Nevada Homebuilders Association to establish a High School Design Awards program. Through this program talented high school students are recognized, rewarded and encouraged to continue in a career path that will bring them to architecture as design professionals. By 1988 the AIA Las Vegas Chapter took over the program and has built an twenty-year history with this program.
Many of the recipients of AIA High School Design Awards have gone on to attend the UNLV School of Architecture, to be recognized with AIA scholarships, to be mentored by AIA architects and to complete their internship and ARE exams while working for AIA member firms. Many are now successful practicing architects in Las Vegas. This meeting will be held in conjunction with CEFPI and will be the highlight our own Architecture Week. All past recipients of awards will be invited to attend.
This very important program recognizes and rewards young design talent from the drafting and art classes of Clark County High Schools. At the beginning of the Fall semester each year, a “design challenge” is issued to the students in 10 to 12 area high schools. They work on their projects under the supervision of their instructors and AIA Advisors to each school. In the Spring, their work is juried, and the best work for each school is recognized and rewarded at the “AIA LV High School Design Awards” program.
Sponsor contributions provide cash awards for winners of this competition. To become a sponsor of the AIA Las Vegas High School Design Awards, please contact Randy Lavigne at rlavigne@aianevada.org
2009-2010 High School Design Competition Needs Advisors
What are you doing this fall? Want to go to school...and help CCSD's young drafting students to learn, understand and appreciate architecture? Here's your chance!
Each year AIA Las Vegas hosts the High School Design Competition in ClarkCounty's High Schools. The chair of this year's program is Yissa H. Renteria and she has designed a great 'design challenge' to present to the students. We are in need of mentors who can volunteer their time to help answer questions, critique work, and add valuable insight to these students design projects. If you'd like to be an advisor and help to inspire young minds, please contact Yissa H. Renteria at 702.435.1150 or yrenteria@pscarchitects.com
